Biography

Artistic background

Born in Asmara (Eritrea) I also grew up in Ethiopia. After high school I lived 5 years in Italy and one year in US studying. Afterwards I went back to Addis Ababa to establish myself permanently where I considered and felt was home for me. As a victim of the border dispute between Ethiopia and Eritrea I was deported in 1998, because of my Eritrean background.

Destiny brought me to Norway at the end of 1998. While at the refugee camp painting was kind of a light to the sad room or situation I was living in. Finally, collecting all the piece I have been painting, I was accepted into the Rogaland School of Art, were I received a basic education in the arts. These two-year allowed me to keep painting and develop, and I wanted to get more education. I therefore went on to study at The Bergen National Academy, department of Fine Arts. The creativity has held me in good stead, overcoming the sense of drift, displacement and exile.
